Whitethorn Academy welcomes people with special needs.
We tailor our coaching programs to each individual, taking account of whether the student’s challenge is physical, intellectual, psychological or behavioural, or a combination of any or all of these.
Our facility is set up to be special needs friendly. The horses we use with our Special People (SPs) are calm, well-mannered and carefully trained to be accommodating to riders who may have balance issues. Our SP lessons are conducted in our covered arena, so when the student is starting to learn to ride off-the-lead, they have the freedom of a spacious area, but which is also bounded by strong boundaries.
Of course we provide special parking zones for wheelchair accessibility and a wheelchair accessible bathroom.
We are familiar with the challenges that can be associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD. We now run ‘Special People Pony Playdates’, from time to time. SPPPs provide a fun and safe environment to encourage kids on the autism spectrum to play cooperatively, using our lovely horses and ponies as catalysts for engagement with others. (Check out the Special People Pony Playdate page on Facebook.)
